Why isn't my Shopify store showing on Google?
SHORT ANSWER
Usually because the store is new, still password-protected, or Google has not been told about it yet. Remove the password page, verify the store in Google Search Console, submit yourstore.com/sitemap.xml and request indexing for the home page. Then give it time: Google says crawling can take from a few days to a few weeks.
This is one of the most common questions from new store owners, and the cause is usually simple. Work through these checks in order; most stores find the problem in the first four.
1. Is the store still password-protected?
Shopify's help centre says a sitemap reader such as Google cannot access your store while it is in private mode. If you still have the password page on, Google can only see that page. Turn it off when you are ready to launch.
2. Search for your store the right way
Type site:yourstore.com into Google, using your own domain. If pages appear, Google has indexed your store, and the problem is ranking, not indexing: skip to checks 7 and 8. If nothing appears, keep going.
3. Verify the store in Google Search Console
Search Console is free and shows what Google knows about your site: which pages are indexed, which are not and why, and which searches show your pages. Shopify's help centre explains how to verify your domain.
4. Submit your sitemap
Shopify creates your sitemap automatically at yourstore.com/sitemap.xml. In Search Console, open Indexing > Sitemaps and submit sitemap.xml. Shopify notes that Google does not guarantee how long indexing takes.
5. Request indexing for your key pages
In Search Console, paste your home page address into URL Inspection and click Request indexing, then do the same for your main collections. Google says requesting a crawl does not guarantee inclusion, but it tells Google the page exists.
6. Check robots.txt and noindex tags
Open yourstore.com/robots.txt. Shopify's default file works for most stores. If someone added a robots.txt.liquid template, or an app added noindex tags, make sure they do not block your products and collections. Search Console's Pages report shows pages excluded by noindex or robots.txt.
7. Make the pages worth showing
Google needs a reason to show a new store above established ones. Product pages with a copied manufacturer description and one photo rarely rank. Write your own titles and descriptions with the details people actually search for, and add a short, useful introduction to each important collection.
8. Give Google reasons to trust the store
A new domain has no history. Links and mentions from real sites, such as your social profiles, business directories, suppliers, partners and press, help Google find the store and judge it. The first search you will rank for is usually your own brand name, so make sure it is consistent everywhere.
How long does it take?
Google says crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. A brand-new store usually appears for its own name first, then for specific product searches, and only later for broad, competitive terms.
Common questions
Why does Google still show my store's password or 'coming soon' page?
Google saw the password page before you launched. After you turn the password off, request indexing of the home page in Search Console; the result updates when Google crawls the page again.
Do I need an SEO app to get my Shopify store on Google?
Not to get indexed. Shopify creates the sitemap and basic tags itself. Apps can help with specific jobs, but too many apps can slow the store down.
My store is indexed but gets no clicks. Why?
Being indexed only means Google knows the pages exist. Clicks come when pages rank for searches people make, which takes better product content, time and mentions from other sites.
