How to check whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity mention your business

SHORT ANSWER

Write 15 to 20 questions a customer would ask, ask each one in fresh chats in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and look at Google's AI Overview for the same searches. Record whether you are mentioned, whether the description is right, which sites are cited and which competitors appear. Repeat monthly and act on patterns, not one answer.

More people ask an AI assistant for a recommendation before they search. You can see how your business appears with a free check that takes about an hour. You need no tools, only a list of questions and a place to write down what comes back.

Step 1: write 15 to 20 buyer questions

Use the words a customer would use, not your own brand terms. Mix three kinds:

  • Discovery: "best [what you sell] in [your city]" or "who can help with [problem]".
  • Comparison: "[your brand] vs [a competitor]" or "alternatives to [competitor]".
  • Direct: "what is [your brand]" and "is [your brand] any good".

Step 2: ask each assistant

Ask the same questions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, each in a fresh chat. Also look at Google for the same queries, because Google may show an AI Overview above the links. Answers change from one run to the next, so ask each question more than once if you can.

Step 3: record what you see

  • Were you mentioned at all, and in what position?
  • Was the description correct (what you do, where, for whom)?
  • Which websites were cited as the source?
  • Which competitors were named instead?

Step 4: read the pattern, not one answer

A single answer proves little because assistants vary. Look for repeats: a wrong fact that appears several times, a competitor who is always named, or a source that is cited again and again. Those are the things worth acting on.

What usually helps

Google says that to appear in its AI features, the basics of SEO still apply: pages that can be crawled and indexed, helpful content, and structured data that matches what is visible on the page. A study of 30 million AI citations found that the most cited sources include community sites, video and professional networks, and that the pattern differs by assistant, so being described accurately across the web matters as much as your own site.

Where Seovixs fits

We run this same check as part of our work, across a fixed set of questions and on a schedule, and report the change from a recorded baseline. You can start with the free scan, which tests whether AI crawlers can reach your site.

Common questions

Why does ChatGPT give a different answer each time?

AI assistants generate each answer fresh and may search different sources each time, so results vary between runs. That is why you ask each question more than once and look for repeats.

Is there a free tool to check this?

The manual check in this guide is free and needs no tools. Our free scan checks a different part of the problem: whether AI crawlers can reach and read your site at all.
