Guides / SEO, GEO and AEO explained
SEO vs GEO vs AEO: what is the difference?
Three terms now dominate conversations about search visibility: SEO, AEO and GEO. They overlap, but they aim at different places where customers find answers.
SEO: Search Engine Optimization
SEO makes your pages rank in search results such as Google and Bing. It covers technical health, content, internal links and authority. It is still the foundation, because search engines and AI systems both depend on sites that are crawlable, clear and trusted.
AEO: Answer Engine Optimization
AEO structures content so a search engine can lift a direct answer: a featured snippet, a People Also Ask result or a voice answer. The work is answer-first writing, clear headings, lists and tables, and matching structured data.
GEO: Generative Engine Optimization
GEO aims at AI assistants and AI search features, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. These systems write an answer and may name or cite businesses. GEO works on whether they can access your site, understand your business, find consistent facts about you and trust you enough to mention you.
Side by side
- SEO: where it shows up is search result pages; the goal is a high ranking and clicks.
- AEO: where it shows up is snippets, answer boxes and voice; the goal is to be the answer.
- GEO: where it shows up is AI assistants and AI summaries; the goal is to be mentioned and cited.
Why we plan them together
The groundwork is shared: a crawlable site, clear content, structured data and real authority. Doing the three as separate projects duplicates effort. Doing them as one plan, with one baseline, puts work where it pays in more than one place.
None of this comes with guarantees. Search engines and AI assistants are not controlled by anyone who sells services. What can be done is to remove obstacles, publish clear and accurate information, and measure what changes.
