Google Ads vs Meta Ads for e-commerce: which to start with

Most online stores do not need to choose one platform forever. They do need to choose where the first budget goes, because splitting a small budget across two platforms usually means neither gets enough data to work well. The short version: Google Ads captures demand that already exists; Meta creates demand by showing your product to people who were not searching for it.

When Google Ads is the better first step

  • People already search for what you sell, by product type or by brand.
  • Your product data is in good shape. Shopping ads and Performance Max use your Google Merchant Center feed, so titles, prices, images and availability matter.
  • You want results tied closely to purchase intent, such as specific products, sizes or models.

Google describes Performance Max as a goal-based campaign type that can reach all Google Ads inventory and can work with a Merchant Center feed. That reach is useful, but it also means the campaign's goal and your conversion tracking need to be right before you give it budget.

When Meta Ads is the better first step

  • Your product is new, visual or easier to want once someone sees it, so few people search for it yet.
  • You can produce a steady stream of creative: photos, short videos, user-generated content.
  • You have, or can build, an offer that works for a cold audience.

Meta's delivery system needs data to settle. Meta says an ad set usually leaves its learning phase after about 50 results in the week after its last significant edit, and that performance is less stable during learning. With a very small budget, an ad set may never get there, so fewer, better-funded ad sets often work better than many small ones.

Before either: fix the measurement

  • Make sure purchases are tracked once, with the right value and currency.
  • Each platform reports the sales it believes it caused, and both may claim the same order. Compare platform numbers with your actual store revenue, not just with each other.
  • Decide in advance what a good result looks like: cost per order, return on ad spend, or new customers, measured over enough weeks to be meaningful.

A simple way to decide

If there is clear search demand for your products, start with Google Shopping or Performance Max on a clean feed. If there is not, start with Meta and treat the first months as creative and offer testing. Add the second platform once the first is stable and measured.
